Our Top 10 Favorite Productivity Tips

Having a difficult time focusing, or getting work done? Me too! Here’s some of my favorite productivity tips to keep you motivated enough to finish up those nasty tasks that just seem to be building up:

  1. Give yourself a deadline.

I’m a procrastinator. In fact, 20% of US men and women are chronic procrastinators, and when there’s no deadline to uphold on tasks it’s way too easy to push it back for weeks. That’s why we recommend setting your own deadline. This will make you less likely to spend time on other, less important projects.

  1. Take a step outside.

Stressed about everything you have to do today? Take your morning coffee or breakfast outside. Going outside is known to reduce stress, and once you go back inside you’ll feel refreshed and ready for any tasks you’ve been meaning to do.

  1. Do one thing at a time.

Although doing one thing at a time might sound less productive, trust us, it’s not! If you’re doing multiple things at once your attention is not focused on one particular thing. Meaning you’re doing multiple things at a mediocre level. Switching between tasks also reduces brain power, you’ll lose energy much quicker than if you just focused on one thing at a time, and you’ll have less energy to complete all your tasks or projects.

  1. Positive and productive self-talk.

When you believe you’re going to succeed there’s a higher chance that you really will succeed. That’s why it’s extremely important to keep telling yourself positive words. A good example of positive and productive self-talk is: “I can and will finish this project.” Think positive and get positive results!

  1. Write up a to-do list.

To-do lists are a great way to stay organized and stay on top of all those things you’ve been meaning to get to. Crossing things off your to-do list is a great way to get that sense of accomplishment after finishing something you worked hard for, and it will help motivate you to stay productive for the next tasks.

  1. Take 5-10 minute breaks.

Don’t overwork yourself. It’ll make you less inclined to do the rest of your work, and totally stress you out. Make sure to take periodic breaks. You can snack or scroll through Instagram, and then get right back to work with a fresh mind, and often, better attitude.

  1. Declutter your environment.

Being in control of the environment you’re working in can also make you feel like you’re in control of the work you’re doing. Decluttering before you start your tasks is a perfect way to “get your head in the game”.

  1. Put away distractions.

Gotta focus? Put that phone away! Find yourself any place you feel that you can really focus. Distractions are the biggest source of unproductivity. Once they’re all gone you’ll find it much easier to complete all the work you’ve been trying to get done.

  1. Switch up your surroundings.

Switching up your surroundings can provide stimulation to your brain, which will then get you up and motivated to finish any tasks. Can’t think of anywhere to go? Try a local coffee shop. A study from the Journal of Consumer Research shows that the coffee shop background noise is just enough to stimulate creativity, and with it productivity.

  1. Keep it fun.

Try to make a game of your chores, tasks, or work. Even if you’re not competing against anyone every human being is hardwired to “win”. This will provide a fun and much more enjoyable way to stay motivated.
